The Best DIY Lip Balm

Chapped lips are so annoying.

The cure to those annoying chapped lips is this DIY lip balm. But you may be thinking, “Why would I ever make lip balm when I can just buy it for a dollar?” And I agree that sometimes it’s easier to buy some things rather than trying to make them. (For me, homemade laundry soap and clothing fall into that category!)

I initially decided to try homemade lip balm as a way to do something fun with my girls. They love lip balm and lip gloss, so I thought this would be a fun craft to do with them during the hot summer afternoons when we couldn’t go outside. But while making my first batch, I became a huge fan. This lip balm is surprisingly fun and easy to make! And it feels so good on your lips. I put some on everyday, and even my husband uses it and loves it.

Once you have the ingredients, it is so quick and easy to make.

The lip gloss is made up of equal parts shea butter, beeswax pearls, and coconut oil. That’s it.

Of course you will need some type of container to put them in. You can buy these little jars at a craft store or online. Or you can just use what you have around the house. I have filled up old mint containers and disposable plastic containers. As long as you can put a lid on it, you can use it as a lip balm jar.

And if you want to make it a little fancier, you can add some spearmint or peppermint essential oils for an awesome scent, and glob of pink or red lipstick to give it some great color.

Directions for six jars of lip balm:

  1. Melt 2 tablespoons of shea butter, 2 tablespoons of beeswax pearls,  and 2 tablespoons of coconut oil in a double broiler on medium heat. (Put all the ingredients in a glass bowl and put the bowl over a pot of boiling water until everything becomes smooth).
  2.  If desired, stir in 4 drops of spearmint or peppermint essential oil and a small piece of pink or red lipstick. Stir again until smooth.
  3. Spoon the mixture into little containers. That’s it! The lip balm will start to harden within a few minutes.

To make our lip balm extra, extra fancy, I made some labels to put on top of our little lip balm containers and I am excited to share them with you! There are two different labels on the page, so you can pick the one that best fits your style.
