Our church has a program called Visiting Teaching. All of the adult women are asked to visit a few other women in our congregation every month in order to find out the needs of the families, and share uplifting and inspiring messages from our church leaders.
Every month we are assigned a topic to share with the women we are assigned to visit. Our topic for August is “Nurturing families together.” This topic specifically talks about the importance of speaking kindly to our family members: “One of the best ways to invite love and harmony into our homes is by speaking kindly to our family members. Speaking kindly brings the Holy Ghost. Sister Linda K. Burton, Relief Society general president, asked us to consider: “How often do we intentionally ‘speak kind words to each other’?”
This quote reminded me of a favorite hymn titled “Let Us Oft Speak Kind Words to Each Other.” The chorus to this songs says:
Kind words are sweet tones of the heart.
The text author of this song is Joseph Longking Townsend (1849-1942). I read a really interesting article on his life and how he came to write this song, and there I learned that he had the lyrics,”Kind words are sweet tones of the heart,” engraved on his headstone. Kind words are so important.
I thought it would be fun to give the sisters we visit teach a handout with these words. And since it talks about “sweet tones,” we could also give them a little “sweet” treat, such as a small bag of M&Ms, or something we picked up at the store or bakery.
I made the printable in two sizes: 8×10 and 4×6. They both look really nice framed or laminated. Or just giving this printable to the sisters on cardstock is awesome too.
