These Halloween banana bites are so fun and easy to make!
Kids love to help make and eat them. This could be your new favorite Halloween treat! (And it’s not all bad because the main ingredient is banana! Yay for semi-healthy!)
My kids are already talking about our Halloween dinner. My youngest has requested purple brain jello this year (it was red brain jello last year), mummy hot dogs, and all our usual appetizers.
We don’t have a traditional dinner on Halloween.
I just lay out lots of finger food and let the kiddos pick and choose what they want to eat. My kids LOVE this! It makes Halloween extra fun that I am not making them eat green beans if they don’t want too. (But let’s be serious…green beans never make it to the Halloween table.)
But these Halloween banana bites are a fan favorite around here. I like that the base is fruit. My kids love that they are colorful and super yummy!
This makes us all happy campers.
These are SO easy to make.
You only need three ingredients: bananas, coconut, and whipped topping.
And I guess we could argue that there is a fourth ingredient: food coloring. But it’s optional. You don’t HAVE to dye your coconut, but let’s be honest. It’s just more fun if you do. So if you are against food dyes, please just considering using them once a year. For these Halloween banana bites. Pretty please? K.
I wanted to make these banana bites purple, orange, and black so I divided my coconut onto three plates. After you know what colors you want to use, and have your coconut put on plates…you get to add the food coloring!
This is my favorite part. I love adding the food coloring to coconut and massaging the dye into the coconut. It’s a sensory thing, for sure. I love watching the white coconut turn colors.
(Just so you know, for the orange and black colors, I used Wilton icing food coloring found a local craft store. The purple dye came from an inexpensive box of food coloring found in the baking section of my Kroger (Smith’s) store.)
After the coconut is colored and ready to go, it’s time to slice the bananas. Just cut them up into bite-sized pieces.
And get out the whipped topping…it’s time for the fun to begin!
Just roll the banana in the whipped topping. Then put the banana in the coconut and pat the coconut around the banana slice so that the banana is completely covered in coconut.
Then place the coconut covered banana slice on a piece of wax or parchment paper so you can continue the process of making more Halloween banana bites!
These banana bites are best when served fresh but can also be made a few hours in advance and kept in the fridge.
Kids love to help but my experience has been that you may find coconut all over the counter and floor. But that’s okay, right? You are making memories. (That’s what I tell myself right before I make the little people get out the broom and sweep up all the coconut.)
And while the kids love this banana snack, I can honestly tell you that I do too.
It’s a sweet, but not-too-sweet snack, and it’s so fun to eat!
I hope you get a chance to make these fun Halloween banana bites this year! The young and young-at-heart will thank you.

Ingredients
- 3 medium sized bananas
- 2 1/2 cups of whipped topping (i.e. Cool Whip)
- 3 cups sweetened coconut flakes
Instructions
- To tint the coconut: Start with about 1 c. of coconut on a plate or piece of wax paper. Put a few drops of food coloring onto the coconut and massage the food coloring into the coconut with your fingers. Do this step with all the colors you want. (Remember: for three bananas, you will use about 3 cups of coconut.)
- Slice the bananas into bite-sized pieces.
- Place a banana piece in the whipped topping and swirl it around until the banana piece is completely covered.
- Place the banana piece into some of the tinted coconut, lightly pressing the coconut into the whipped topping so that the banana ball is completely covered in coconut and fairly dry to the touch.
- Serve immediately. (You can also make these a few hours in advance and store them in the fridge.)
