My alarm clock rang every morning at 4:30 am. I hated that alarm.
I was the seminary class president that year, and we lived 30 minutes out of town. Because I was supposed to be there early enough to greet my fellow seminary students as they staggered in the door, I got up waaayyy to early.
When I got to seminary, it was still dark and cold. It was easy to complain about how miserable I was.
But I had a friend who was an optimist. She would always say, “Now we get to see the sunrise and the sunset.”
Obviously she was a morning person. I tried not to hate her for it.
But I didn’t go to early morning seminary for the sunrise. Or even for the cute boys in class. Although, the cute boys did help. 🙂
I went because of Sister Fackrell.
Sister Fackrell was a convert to the church. And she loved us.
She made games for us. She gave us “seminary bucks” when we came on time and answered questions. Then we had an auction at the end of the semester where we could use our seminary bucks to buy cool stuff, like lip gloss and pens.
The treat tag in the seminary kit that says “Thanks for rolling out of bed for seminary” was inspired by her. One day she gave each of us a cinnamon roll with a toothpick sticking out that had that saying on it.
I’ll always remember Sister Fackrell. Looking back as an adult, I realize her life was really hard. But her hard work and sacrifice for us has always stayed with me. I don’t know where she is or what she’s doing now, but I still love her.
She gave up her time and energy so I could learn the scriptures.
Seminary teachers are special people. You do what most of dread doing (getting up super-duper early and teaching), and you change the world by loving and teaching and ministering to the youth.
I’m beyond grateful for all the seminary teachers out there.
My daughter is now “a youth” and I know that seminary can change everything for a teenager.
Not only do teenagers get to study the scriptures, but they learn powerful lessons on recognizing the Holy Ghost and how he communicates with them.
That’s priceless.
So I want to do what I can to help you.
