I loved to feel like I was “sewing” when I was kid. I enjoyed cross-stitch and I tried to hand-sew pieces of fabric together to make little bags.
I am sad to admit that I never developed a talent or love for sewing. Like, real adult sewing. You know, with a sewing machine. I wish I could do big, awesome sewing projects, like making my own curtains or sewing all my kids matching Easter dresses. Alas, I more of a button-sewer and that’s about it.
But I totally get it when my girls get excited about little sewing crafts. And these little sewing cards are right up their alley. My middle daughter is my most crafty kid and she has these cards organized by string color and card size so that she is ready to use them at any time. Atta, girl!
Not only are these sewing cards fun, but they help teach manual dexterity and fine motor skills with those little fingers, which is so important!
And these sewing cards, or lacing cards, are a lot of fun! You can pick any color of shoelaces, yarn, ribbon, or twine for the “sewing.” You can put your holes far apart or really close together to make it more challenging.
Since Valentine’s Day has a lot of pinks and reds, hearts and flowers, I wanted to make sure that I included at least one graphic that wasn’t so girly.
But I gotta say, the paper airplane graphic is still a big hit my girls, haha.
These sewing cards come in two sizes. There is the large size, which means there is only one graphic per page. The smaller size fist two graphics per page.
Options are always a great thing, right?!

- Download the sewing cards linked below and print them out on card stock or heavy paper.
- Cut out the shapes, and if desired, laminate them. I use an older version of this laminator and I love it!
- Next you need to punch holes around the card. I think a standard hole punch works great here. It makes the holes big enough for the kids to easily put the string through. Holes closer together will be more challenging and holes farther apart will be easier.
- Find your string of choice. I like shoelaces (38″ or 45″ lengths works great), yarn, and twine. If using yarn or twine, it’s a good idea to put some tape on one end (this prevents fraying and makes it easier for the kids to put through the holes) and tie a double knot on the opposite end so the string won’t come out.
I really hope your kids enjoy these sewing cards! Happy Valentine’s Day! ♥
